The movie Frozen has a song that my boys enjoy: “Love is an Open Door.” My boys love to play it again and again. I’d like to say I’m sick of it, but frankly, I’m not…just yet. Ask me again at the end of the day ;).
The characters Anna (or as my son lovingly refers to her as “Donna”) and Hans see love as an open door. They sing a song about finding someone who is just like them. And yes, they are so young, and the song doesn’t really make sense, but I think of this phrase “love is an open door” as so much more.
In our home, when the weather is nice, our back door is wide open. The boys can run in and out with ease; we all feel the breeze inside as if we are outside. This open door is like a heart, open and forgiving, easy-going and welcoming, satisfied and content. The door gently rocks back and forth with the breeze.
But Love
I used to think love was giving away money to the poor:
Giving here, there, giving a little and a little bit more.
I used to think love was shouting loudly so others could hear;
My well thought-out words and poignant speeches bringing hope to fear.
I used to think love was understanding a head full of facts,
The way I recorded and memorized would make an impact.
I used to think faith was shown in moving mountains here to there;
Putting all my loquacious words in the form of a prayer.
But when I have everything that God gives and nothing more,
I am left with an emptiness that I just can’t ignore.
Nothing can be gained or given when love is all but present,
Acts are done, but a heart that has no love is filled with discontentment.
But God shows us that “love endures long and is patient and kind”
Love is the catalyst when faith and hope become intertwined
Love is giving and forgetting and meeting us where we fail;
God’s love is pure and faithful, bearing with us in every detail.
God ensures every fiber of our hearts are encased in love.
Through love, the desires of our hearts are satisfied from above.
God loves us first, unconditionally with an open heart,
His love never fails, drives out fear, and is a true work of art
May our prayers become, “Empty me of every selfish yearning.
Fill our hearts with love, and make our hearts malleable for learning.”
